Slow this week

Well I have been a slower reader these past few days, am failing miserably with the Trollope but have to have it read by monday for my new book group. I am really enjoying Shadow of the Wind but trying to catch up on work in the evenings so not getting much reading done. However still finding time to catch up with the world in blog land:)

I have hopefully got one of my old friends interested in bookcrossing, I am really enjoying the whole vibe of BC at the moment, released another book yesterday and will try and release one on the bus in the morning.

But that is enough about BC, hmm other things. Shakespeare's birthday! My favourite Shakespeare is Measure for Measure, I seem to be the only one that finds that my favourite. I must read more of Shakespeare though, it is something I have not read enough of.

I am currently trying to decide whether to stay in teaching or not, I just don't know what to do instead. I do love the kids, its just all the paperwork and jumping through hoops I can't stand. So feel free to suggest alternative careers for me!

Professional lit blogger?

I hope you enjoy 'The Shadow of the Wind'. It's one of my all-time favorite books.

Kookie's got a good idea.

I, too, left academia for similar reasons. For me, it was mostly the politiciking to get the classes I wanted to teach... I looked at the people who were encouraging me to stay and thanked them, but I had books to write.

I hear there are big changes afoot at BXing... we shall see what transpires, huh?

Hmmm...that's a tough call. Right now I'm working for a huge corporation writing code and creating systems. Not what I would really like to do with my life, but at the moment, it's paying the bills. If I could back and do it all again, I know I would have chosen differently. But you are young enough that you can do whatever you like. Just find something you love!

I used to be really unhappy with the bureaucracy at my old school. When I left and started my current job, that aspect of my life stopped being a problem. Maybe the answer is to find a school where you feel more comfortable.

I read The Shadow of the Wind about a month ago, and really enjoyed it!

kookiejar- Yes please, what a great career!
Susan- yes, a lot of buzz seems to have been created at this years convention- lots of new partnerships and new features. Exciting stuff.
Stephanie- Hmm something I love- professional book reader? lol.
dewey- this is exactly what OH says, give another school a chance. I had a horrible day yesterday and the thought of applying for other schools doesn't entice me but I will at least try and see what happens.

I tagged you for a meme, a.book. I can't wait to read your answers, as it seems we share similar taste in books. You'll find it on my blog.

Both of my daughters and one of my sons-in-law are teachers. I've watched them grow frustrated over the years for the same reasons you mention...plus the negative help that they receive from parents of some of their students. In fact, my son-in-law is going to leave teaching in June after 15 years in the classroom. He's going to work for a company as an in-house instructor and seems very excited about the change. Best of luck to you in whatever you decide.

Thanks for your comments Sam, that is sad news that your son-in-law is leaving teaching but brilliant that he is so excited about his new job, shows there is life outside teaching!

I think teaching is the most undervalued job out there, and it is such a shame!

I used to be a professional book reader, sort of--I used to read scripts and books for a movie studio. And unfortunately, for me, having to look at the material with an eye to producing it as a movie took much of the joy out of the reading. But I worked in my pajamas most days, so that was good! The other downside is you have to live in Los Angeles, or maybe New York, to do it!

Maybe you could work in a bookstore, instead. It's loads of fun. I miss my old bookstore job (the boss took the stock and moved the whole store to Florida).

I'm having a slow reading week, too. Can't seem to focus, this week.

Thanks Biblio, as you may tell from a post I have literally just posted this has been a weird week for me but books have still been at the front of my mind peeking through the teaching stuff.

Welcome to my little nook in the big old internet:)
